The CCAI NEWS Flash!

A. Welcome! - CCAI NEWS Flash!

With summer upon us, CCAI will be hosting an opening reception on Friday, June 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery, for Nosotros por Nostros and Nos, two linked summer exhibitions. We hope you'll join us for a festive celebration on the longest day of the year.

Also, artist Anthony Alston's exhibition "Orphic Excavations," our collaborative CCAI Artist in Residence project, continues through June 29 at St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City.

Over the summer, we will be busy planning for our upcoming 2008-2009 season, one that promises to be our best ever. As always, we also have the first Wednesday afternoon of every month reserved for FWAC! at its terrfic new location, the Bliss Mansion. Our thanks again to hosts Cyndy and Steve Brenneman!

Details on the above in the calendar below. We hope to see you at one of our CCAI programs, and we thank you for your support!

Artist Reception:
Nosotros por Nostros | Nos

"Nosotros por Nosotros: Latinos in Nevada Tell Their History" is a compelling photography exhibition that explores the traditions and transitions experienced by Nevada's Latino communities. In an effort to promote cross-cultural understanding and awareness, the University of Nevada, Reno Latino Research Center recently distributed five hundred disposable cameras to Nevada's Latino communities, asking them to tell their stories through photography. Elementary school soccer players, middle-aged casino workers, and seasoned professionals captured their daily experiences, creating rich and diverse imagery.

"Nos," a companion project, was developed by CCAI with Nevada Hispanic Services-Carson City and students from the Carson High School Echo Club. Seven teens, Aaron Davalos, Cristina Lobato, Erasmo "Mo" Cosio, Teresa Anaya, Jeanette Gonzalez, and Jenny Bracamontes, photographed their daily lives, and then processed their images at the high school's Tech Center. Their images, ranging from custom bicycles to children playing in a park, are a terrific element of the exhibition.

Erik Burke

From the August 2006 press release: "Local Carson City bicyclist Glenn Lucky is the inspiration for Mr. Burke's mural, not only because the artist is an avid cyclist, but also because of Mr. Lucky’s admirable determination and community engagement. Mr. Lucky has cerebral palsy, but he doesn’t let that stop him. He has ridden about 40 miles a day through heat, cold, rain and snow since he was 15 years old. What initially started as therapy to loosen his muscles has turned into his passion."
