FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dr. Lerner is Executive Director of The Laboratory of Art and Ideas at Belmar, a trail-blazing program located in the Denver area. The Laboratory is committed to an energetic rethinking of the museum-going experience. He was the Master Teacher for Modern and Contemporary Art at the Denver Art Museum from 2001 to 2003, and Curator of the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore, prior to his move to Colorado. He received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and a Masters from Cambridge University. Since the early 1990s, his scholarship has focused on the relationship between art and the public. He is an expert on early twentieth century American monuments, and in particular, Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore. In his talk, he will describe his efforts to develop The Laboratory of Art and Ideas as an alternative to the traditional art museum by combining elements of an art museum, think tank and public forum. Dr. Lerner comments: "At Belmar we attempt to avoid the "pretentious" associated with art, while maintaining a sophisticated approach to culture by using humor, chance, spectacle, and self-effacement." "Experimenting with Art and Ideas" is Nevada Neighbors' twentieth presentation. Now in its sixth year, the series has been held at and presented with the Carson City Library since 2004. CCAI is funded by the Carson City Redevelopment Authority; the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts; The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; the James W.
